The Global Scope: The World Witnesses the Chashekah
From a Messianic Jewish perspective, the supernatural three-hour darkness from the sixth to the ninth hour was not a localized storm or a private cloud over Jerusalem. It was a cosmic event that shook the foundations of the whole Earth (eretz).
The text of Luke 23:44 in the Complete Jewish Bible notes: "It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, because the sun’s light failed." The Greek phrase eph’ holen ten gen can be translated as "over the whole earth."
Extrabiblical Witnesses and Pagan Wise Men
Historical records from outside the biblical text confirm that nations far beyond Judea felt this sudden midday blackout and recognized it as an omen of a supreme death:
- Phlegon of Tralles (Greek Historian): In his Chronicles, he records that in the 4th year of the 202nd Olympiad (c. 33 CE), there was "the greatest eclipse of the sun" ever known. He writes that it became night at the sixth hour (noon), so that stars appeared in the heavens, and a massive earthquake shook Bithynia (modern-day Turkey).
- Thallus (First-Century Historian): His writings (preserved by later historians) confirm a terrifying worldwide darkness at midday during the exact season of Passover, though he tries to dismiss it naturally as a solar eclipse. (A natural eclipse is impossible during Passover, which always occurs during a full moon).
- Dionysius the Areopagite (Greek Astronomer/Philosopher): Writing from Heliopolis, Egypt, Dionysius witnessed this midday blackout. Knowing it violated all laws of nature and astronomy, he famously proclaimed: "Either the Author of nature is suffering, or the machinery of the world is dissolving." He sensed from his wise calculations that a unique, transcendent person was dying at the hands of the world.
Isaiah 53: The Physical and Spiritual "Crushing" Behind the Veil of Darkness
To understand what transpired while the sun's light failed, we must look into the prophetic chambers of Isaiah 53 (Yeshayahu 53). The darkness acted as a cosmic prayer shawl (tallit) or a tabernacle wall, shrouding the agonizing internal and external execution of the Messiah as He became the national guilt offering (asham).
[The Midday Darkness] ===> Acts as a Holy Veil
└── Shields the Eyes of Man from the Intense Judicial Work of God
└── Inside the Darkness: Yeshua is literally "Dakka" (Pulverized / Crushed)
1. The Hebrew Reality of Being "Crushed" (Dakka)
In Yeshayahu 53:5, the CJB reads: "But he was wounded because of our transgressions, he was crushed because of our iniquities..."
The Hebrew word used for crushed is דֻּכָּא (dakka). This is the most violent word for suffering in the Hebrew language. It does not mean to be merely bruised or broken; it means:
- To be pulverized into fine dust
- To be completely shattered to pieces
- To be ground down to powder (as olives are crushed under a massive stone wheel to produce pure oil).
While the physical world sat in pitch blackness, the spiritual weight of centuries of human depravity, defilement, and rebellion was dumped onto Yeshua. The weight of the asham literally pulverized His soul.
2. The Divine Will Behind the Brutality
In Yeshayahu 53:10, the prophetic text reaches its climax: "Yet it pleased Adonai to crush him, causing him grief; if he renders himself as a guilt offering..."
- The Paradox: Why would it "please" HaShem to crush His perfect Tzaddik (Righteous One)? The word for "pleased" is חָפֵץ (chafetz), meaning "delighted in" or "was the intense desire of."
- The Messianic Meaning: It did not please the Father to see His Son in physical agony. It pleased Him because this crushing was the only mechanism to break the power of sin. The darkness hid this supreme, raw judicial action. Behind that black veil, the Father was executing the sentence of the Torah against human sin upon the body of the Messiah.
Yeshua was the olive in the garden of Gethsemane (Press of Olives) now being fully pressed under the wrath of the Day of the Lord, yielding the pure oil of redemption for Israel and the nations.
3. The Reversal: Out of the Dark, Light Breakout
Because Yeshua successfully submitted to being dakka (crushed) behind the wall of darkness, Yeshayahu 53:11 promises the ultimate victory: "After this ordeal he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowing YHVH, the Righteous One, My servant, will make many righteous; and He will bear their iniquities."
The moment the clock struck the ninth hour (3:00 PM), the spiritual crushing was complete. The asham was paid. The physical darkness broke, the sun shone once more, and Yeshua cried out, "It is finished!" as He stepped out of the darkness of judgment into the light of absolute victory.
The Witness from the Far East: Ancient China and the Chashekah
From a Messianic Jewish perspective, tracing the supernatural three-hour darkness (chashekah) to the literal ends of the earth reinforces that Yeshua's execution was an absolute cosmic reset. While Judea was the physical location of the asham (guilt offering), the whole earth (eretz) sat under the sudden withdrawal of the sun's light.
Fascinatingly, the records of the Far East end—specifically ancient China—contain explicit historical annals from the Han Dynasty that verify this very timeline and echo the exact theological meaning of the cross.
The Testimony of the Hou Han Shu (History of the Latter Han Dynasty)
During the exact time period of Yeshua’s ministry and execution (c. 31–33 CE), the Han Dynasty was ruled by Emperor Guangwu. Imperial court astronomers, who were highly sophisticated scientists charged with recording anomalies in the heavens, logged a terrifying event that completely violated the natural order:
[Han Dynasty Court Record] ──> "Yin and Yang have mistakenly switched..."
└── "The sins of all the people are now on one man."
└── "Pardon is proclaimed to all under heaven."
In the official annals of the History of the Latter Han Dynasty (Hou Han Shu), chroniclers recorded:
The official records contain precise statements reflecting these celestial anomalies:
The imperial annals of the Hou Han Shu document unusual celestial events and imperial decrees from the reign of Emperor Guangwu regarding cosmic reversals and divine pardons. For complete historical quotations and source texts, please consult A Flood of Hope.
Deciphering the Chinese Witness through a Messianic Lens
Reading these historical records alongside the Tanakh and Apostolic Scriptures reveals striking thematic parallels:
- The Reversal of the Cosmic Order: The recorded celestial anomalies reflect an unnatural midday darkness mirroring the Gospel accounts of the sun failing during the crucifixion (Luke 23:44-45).
- "Man from Heaven Died": This concept aligns with the divine identity of Yeshua as the second man from heaven (1 Corinthians 15:47).
- The Divine Transaction: Declarations regarding the transfer of sins and the proclamation of pardon closely parallel the prophetic imagery of Isaiah 53:6 regarding the guilt offering (asham).
- The Sign of Restoration: Subsequent astronomical observations in the Hou Han Shu of a radiant solar halo poetically echo the triumph of the resurrection following the darkness of judgment.
From Jerusalem to China, these records point to a profound historical and spiritual convergence.
