The Darkness At Golgatha - in concept of Tenakh

The Supernatural Sign: The Midday Chashekah

The three hours of darkness at Golgotha from the sixth hour to the ninth hour (noon to 3:00 PM) represent a profound cosmic and prophetic junction. From a Messianic Jewish perspective, using the lens of the Complete Jewish Bible (CJB), this was not a mere meteorological anomaly or a natural eclipse. It was an act of HaShem (the LORD)—a tangible, terrifying signature of the Day of Adonai (Yom Adonai).
In Jewish thought, midday is when the sun is at its zenith, representing maximum light, warmth, and life. To turn midday into midnight is the ultimate divine intervention.
[Egypt's 9th Plague] ----> 3 Days of Palpable Darkness (Ex 10:22) ----> Judged Ra & Egypt
[Golgotha's Execution] --> 3 Hours of Palpable Darkness (Lk 23:44) ---> Judged Sin & Covered the Lamb
The Prophetic Thread of Divine Darkness
To understand the weight of the darkness over Eretz Yisrael during the execution of Yeshua, we must trace the thread of chashekah (great, supernatural darkness) through the Tanakh (Old Testament).
1. The Covenant of the Pieces (Brit Bein HaBetarim)
In Genesis 15:12, as the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Avram; and hinei (behold), a dread, a great darkness (chashekah) fell upon him. This dark dread ushered in the foundational covenant where God alone walked between the pieces, guaranteeing the redemption of Abraham’s seed. At Golgotha, the chashekah returned. The greater covenant was being sealed not with the blood of animals, but with the blood of the Messiah.
2. The Akedah (The Binding of Isaac)
The prompt evokes Genesis 22:2, where Abraham is commanded: "Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac... and offer him there as a burnt offering." As Abraham journeyed to the place of slaughter, prophetic shadows loomed. While Genesis 22 doesn't explicitly speak of cosmic darkness, Rabbinic tradition connects the trial to the ultimate overshadowing of divine grief. At Golgotha, the ultimate Akedah took place—but this time, the Father did not stay the knife.
3. The Ninth Plague: Egypt Immobilized
We read in Exodus 10:22 that Moses stretched out his hand, and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days.
  • The Contrast: Egypt suffered three days of dense, palpable darkness while the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
  • The Fulfillment: At the execution stake, the three days of Egypt's cosmic judgment were compressed into three hours of intense spiritual compression. For three hours, the Light of the World was swallowed by the plague of our sin, entering the very matrix of spiritual exile to purchase our absolute exodus.
Midday: The Signature of Yom Adonai and the Mourning for an Only Son
The Hebrew prophets explicitly link the midday blackout to the final Day of Judgment and an unparalleled mourning.
Scripture PassagesProphetic Element & MeaningMessianic Realization at Golgotha
Amos 8:9-10"I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in broad daylight... I will make it like the mourning for an only son."Yeshua is executed at noon. The universe enters into deep shiva for the Ben Yachid (the Only Begotten Son).
Joel 2:31"The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the great and terrifying Day of Adonai comes."The supernatural darkness signifies that the ultimate day of divine reckoning was breaking over the cross.
Zephaniah 1:15"That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress... a day of darkness and gloominess."The wrath due to Israel and the nations is completely concentrated upon the righteous sufferer.
Amos also mentions in Amos 8:10 that He will "turn your feasts into mourning." Yeshua was crucified on Pesach (Passover)—the ultimate feast of redemption and joy was instantly transformed into a day of cosmic mourning.
(Note: Amos 7:14 reinforces the prophet's identity as a simple herdsman called by God, ensuring that this shocking prophecy was directly from the Spirit of Adonai, not political calculation).
The Divine Purpose: The Ultimate Asham (Guilt Offering)
Why did the light vanish? Why did HaShem envelope the scene in thick, impenetrable gloom? The purpose is captured perfectly in the Apostolic and Prophetic texts:
2 Corinthians 5:21 (Messianic Application):
God made Yeshua, who knew no sin, to be a sin offering on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
At Golgotha, a divine transaction occurred behind the veil of that three-hour darkness. Yeshua was not merely dying a martyr's death; He was becoming the literal embodiment of the nation’s chet (sin). The darkness served as a cosmic screen; the holy eyes of the Father could not look upon the raw deformity of human sin as it was fused to His pristine Son.
This matches the monumental prophecy of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah 53:10:
"Yet it pleased Adonai to crush Him, causing Him grief; if He renders Himself as an asham (guilt offering), He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of Adonai will prosper in His hand."
The darkness was the external manifestation of Yeshua being "crushed" by the weight of the asham. By enduring the dark reality of separation and judgment during those three hours, Yeshua emerged victorious, fulfilling the remainder of Isaiah's word: He prolonged His days through the Resurrection, securing an eternal spiritual seed (offspring) for all who trust in Him.
