Explore how the second beast rising from the land (verse 11) serves as a direct geographical and spiritual contrast to this first beast of the sea.

Hisgalus (Revelation) 13:11
11. Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth. It had two horns like those of a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.
Commentary
Coming up out of the earth. In the Jewish New Testament Commentary (JNTC) style, we must analyze this phrase using the direct Hebrew contrast between ים (Yam – the Sea) and ארץ (Eretz – the Land/Earth). This geographical transition marks a profound shift in the spiritual, political, and cultural origin of the second beast (the False Prophet) compared to the first.

1. The Geographical Contrast: Yam vs. Eretz
  • The Sea (Yam): As established in verse 1, the sea represents the international, shifting, chaotic matrix of the pagan Gentile world powers (Isaiah 17:12, Daniel 7:2–3).
  • The Land (Eretz): In Hebrew thought, HaEretz explicitly denotes the Land of Israel—the stable, defined ground of divine revelation, the Covenant, and the Torah. When Yochanan sees this beast rising from the Eretz, the prophetic geography signals that this figure emerges from within the religious infrastructure of the religious world, specifically targeting or originating from the covenant environment of the Jewish world or institutionalized faith.
  • The Contrast: While the first beast is an external, political, and military conqueror (Gentile global empire), the second beast is an internal, religious, and deceptive corruptor. It is an apostate force growing out of "holy soil" to pervert the truth from within.
2. The Spiritual Contrast: Pagan Brutality vs. Lamb-Like Deception
  • The first beast is visually terrifying—a composite monster with ten horns and seven heads, wearing its blasphemy openly. It relies on raw power, subjugation, and fear.
  • The second beast wears a masterclass mask of counterfeit holiness: it has two horns like those of a lamb. It mimics the appearance of the true Lamb (Yeshua), affecting an aura of humility, religious authority, and messianic identity.
  • However, the text exposes the spiritual reality: it spoke like a dragon. The voice gives away the source. It uses the language of Satan (Torahlessness, manipulation, and deceptive signs) to enforce the worship of the political state (the first beast). It represents the ultimate danger of corrupted institutional religion.
Zohar Light Concept: The Cliphas of Yam and Yabashah
From the perspective of Jewish mystical thought, the contrast between the Sea (Yam) and the dry Land (Yabashah / Eretz) corresponds to different manifestations of the Klipot (the spiritual husks or shells of impurity that conceal the divine light).
  1. The Hidden vs. The Revealed Evil: In the Zohar (specifically Zohar II, 34b), the sea represents the hidden world (Alma d'Itkasya), while the dry land represents the revealed world (Alma d'Itgalya).
    • The beast from the sea represents an evil that arises from the hidden, murky depths of the primordial serpent (Nachash Kadmon)—unfiltered, raw, and chaotic satanic power.
    • The beast from the land represents an evil that manifests in the structured, civilized, and revealed world. It uses language, theology, and philosophy (the "earthy" structures of human intellect) to distort reality.
  2. The Blemish of the Tav on the Land: Returning to the mystical concept of the letter Tav (the mark), the Zohar notes that the earth (Eretz) was sustained because it was stamped with the seal of truth (Emet). When the second beast rises from the Eretz, it mimics this foundation. It creates a counterfeit "earthly stability." By using signs like calling down fire from heaven to mimic Elijah (v. 13), it manipulates the physical elements of the Eretz to fabricate a false divine mandate.
The Separation of the Elements: The Zohar teaches that in the ultimate redemption, Adonai will dry up the chaotic sea and purify the land. The two beasts represent the final, desperate consolidation of these two realms of impurity (Klipat HaYam and Klipat HaEretz) joining forces to trap human consciousness in total darkness—marrying global political totalitarianism with deep internal religious deception.
